Objectify

2014 Harb40 Passion Competition Rules and Guidelines

Objectify:
1) To treat as an object instead of a person;
2) to give expression to (as an abstract notion, feeling, or ideal) in a form that can be experienced by others

7 types of objectification
1) Instrumentality. The objectifier treats the object as a tool of his or her purposes.

2) Denial of autonomy. The objectifier treats the object as lacking in autonomy and self-determination.

3) Inertness. The objectifier treats the object as lacking in agency, and perhaps also in activity.

4) Fungibility. The objectifier treats the object as interchangeable (a) with other objects of the same type and/or (b) with objects of other types.

5) Violability. The objectifier treats the object as lacking in boundary integrity, as something that it is permissible to break up, smash, break into.

6) Ownership. The objectifier treats the object as something that is owned by another, can be bought or sold, etc.

7) Denial of subjectivity. The objectifier treats the object as something whose experience and feelings (if any) need not be taken into account.

Examples:
a) she says beauty pageants objectify women
b) he is looked at as just a friend so they can use him for muscle work (moving stuff)
c) the trophy wife or the sugar daddy

"admiration of physical beauty becomes objectification" -- only the beauty matters, not the person

A man sees his wife as a mysterious inhuman natural force, a “blazing kernel of darkness.”

A female reduces a male to his genital dimensions, regarding him as somewhat less human than the stallion to which she jokingly compares him.

The Playboy caption reduces the young actress, a skilled tennis player, to a body ripe for male use: It says, in effect, she thinks she is displaying herself as a skilled athletic performer but all the while she is actually displaying herself to our gaze as a sexual object.

A male and a female contemplate their respective spouses as priceless antiques whom they have collected and arranged.

Write a short story about your interpretation of objectify.

Ladies and gentlemen

Thank you for your submissions. The competition is now closed.

Due to the low number of submissions, we will have to confer with the sponsors on how they want to proceed with the resolution of the contest. There was a minimum number of 5 entries set in order to award the full prize package as it was posted. We will check with the sponsors as to if they wish to stay with what has been offered or if they are going to go with an alternative package.

We will keep everyone posted in a separate thread as we get more information. As for now, it is in the judges hands on how the stories place.
