2017 Passion Competition Rules and Guidelines

Passion is a concept that has been used in philosophy. It is different from the current popular connotation of passion which is associated with notions of romance and which is generally seen as a positive and good emotion. The philosophical notation, in contrast, is identified with an innate or biologically driven emotional states such as anger, greed, lust or the other deadly sins.

The Seven Deadly Sins

1. Lust is usually thought of as excessive thoughts or desires of a sexual nature.

2. Gluttony is generally thought of as over-indulgence or over-consumption to the point of waste. Most commonly associated with food.

3. Greed is, like lust and gluttony, a sin of excess. However, greed is applied to a very excessive or rapacious desire and pursuit of wealth, status, and power.

4. Sloth can be classified as laziness or the failure to utilize one’s talents and gifts.

5. Wrath may be described as inordinate and uncontrolled feelings of hatred and anger. Feelings of anger can manifest in different ways, including impatience, revenge, and vigilantism.

6. Envy, although similar to lust, is largely associated with material goods. Those who commit this sin resent that another person has something they perceive themselves as lacking, and wish the other to be deprived of it.

7. Pride, considered the original and most serious of the seven deadly sins, is identified as a desire to be more important or attractive than others, failing to acknowledge the good work of others, and excessive love of self.

The task at hand will be to write a script using two (2) or more of the Seven Deadly Sins.

Harb40 Passion Competition
Submission Form
Online Name: Coexist4love
Real Name: Hans Huffman
Title: BLY'S WORLD “Scarves of Sin”
Genre: Historical Fiction/Fantasy/Dramedy (51 pages)
Story Description: In 1890, Nellie Bly, a strong woman, and role model, for women everywhere worked as a celebrity journalist in a world dominated by men. Aimee Crocker a wealthy, wild socialite, travels to India and obtains 7 scarves with the power to induce the 7 deadly sins on other people. At a costume party, Crocker uses them at her New York City penthouse on the protagonist, world famous Nellie Bly, as well as Joseph Pulitzer and the rest of the journalists who worked at “The World” newspaper in New York City. The arc of the script is the characters' humorous struggle to overcome the curse of the scarves power over them.
Additional Info: Much of the dialogue is based on actual quotes from the historical characters in the script who were somewhat familiar with each other. Nellie Bly was a famous for setting the fastest speed record around the world, going undercover into an Asylum in New York City and being a WWI war correspondent. Since in the contest, the script was recommended for a 30 minute feature, I wrote it in the traditional multi-camera format (30 sec. a page, action in CAPS) used in popular 30 minute TV sitcoms from the 50s up until today rather than the standard screenplay format of movies or 1 hour dramas (1 min a page).

Just went through my entry and fixed some spelling errors. I hope it's alright if I repost the script.

This contest is now closed.

Unfortunately there were not enough entries to award a copy of Final Draft 10 so we are forced to return the certificates to the sponsor.

Since there were only 2 entries we will have to decide how to handle this and what to award the top script.

We do appreciate the effort that the entrants made.
